HMS Kennet was a River Class destroyer of the Royal Navy launched in 1905. At the start of the war she was attached to the China Station in Hong Kong and was one of the ships sent to Tsingtao, the on the Chinese coast, to blockade the German naval base there. On 22nd August, 1914 (some sources record this as being 23rd August) she was damaged in action with the German gun boat Jaguar and a shore battery, as a result of which three of her crew were killed. One of these was John Armstrong.
